This site contains information about the unit, our aircraft,
What we do as well as information for the cadets who will be taught to fly.
We are known as 611 Volunteer Gliding School ( 611VGS ) to those who have seen or visited us before.


Our primary function in the Air Cadet Organisation is to provide gliding experience and training to members of the following Cadet Organisations

  • The Air Training Corps (ATC) from Norfolk, Suffolk and East Cambridgeshire
  • The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) from Norfolk, Suffolk and East Cambridgeshire.


Flying training for cadets is broadly in the following categories:

1. Gliding Induction Courses (GIC Levels 1, 2 & 3)

2. Gliding Scholarships (GS)

3. Advanced Gliding Training (AGT Level 1 & 2)

We Fly the Grob 103 which is a GRP Sailplane, adapted for use in the Air Training Corps, known as the Viking, it is a two seat aircraft.

We fly from STANTA Airfield Watton, where we are the primary airfield user.

All of the staff are volunteers, some who hold a commission in the RAF Volunteer Reserve.

The Air training Corps has 26 gliding schools throughout the country

  • 13 schools operate the Viking (Winched Launched)
  • 13 schools operate the Vigilant (Self Launching) gliders
