Introduction

The following information is for the guidance of escorting staff visiting 611 Volunteer Gliding School at Watton, in the hope that it clearly explains the operations and the responsibilities that you have as an escorting officer.

Requirements to Fly

In order to fly the cadets must be enrolled and in possession of a F3822.  The F3822 must be suitably endorsed by the Squadron CO with the parents consent to fly. On arrival the F3822 will be checked by a member of staff and those cadets who have not already done so will be asked to satisfy the requirements of the 'Parachute Pull Test'.

All the above are a requirement before a cadet will be allowed to fly.

Arrival

See Location page for map and further details. Arrival for the days flying should be by 08:45 hours, There may be circumstances when we are unable to fly. Every effort will be made to contact Squadrons in advance

Clothing

Cadets should arrive for gliding in greens or uniform and bring suitable clothing for the day. Boots and shoes with a deep tread must not be worn in the glider cockpit. Sunglasses are advisable throughout the year. The airfield is a very exposed place so consider the following:

Winter

The airfield can be very cold, windy and wet. Cadets should wear warm clothing in layers. It is also recommended that they bring a warm hat, gloves, and a waterproof coat.

Summer

The airfield can be hot and dry, cotton clothing offers the best protection from the sun. Sun cream and a suitable hat are also advisable.

Messing

There are no messing facilities available for GIC cadets, sufficient food and drink should be brought for the day. Cadets should make sure that any food, drink or additional kit they require during the day is taken out onto the airfield with them.

Briefings

The main daily briefing for the day is for the staff. If escorting staff arrive before this time they are welcome to sit in on the briefing. Following the staff briefing a member of the VGS staff will brief the cadets on what is expected of them during the day and give them the Health and Safety brief.

Duty Instructor

The Duty Instructor (DI) is a nominated senior instructor who controls the gliding operations. Regardless of rank the DI always has authority over all other staff.

Escorting Officers Responsibilities

The staff of the VGS have responsibilities for the safety and efficient running of the flying operations. To assist with the smooth running of the operations you will be required to monitor and look after your cadets, ensuring they carry out the tasks set.

Departure

Following the cessation of flying operations, the visiting cadets will be required to assist with the cleaning of the aircraft and the accommodation, prior to their departure from the airfield.
